A Jock McDonald Remix Project by Pete Smith.

This blog is a running journal that was made in conjunction with my artist residency at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada that took place between December 2014 and February of 2015.

A Brother to a Sister of a Thought

The ever-reliable Oxford English Dictionary (or the online version anyways) describes a postscript as such:

1. An additional remark at the end of a letter, after the signature and introduced by ‘PS”.

and:

1.1 An extra piece of information about an event that is added after it has happened.

As the title for this project, I am interested in both of these related but ultimately separate usages. Firstly, and somewhat coincidentally, PS are my initials. This project is an additional remark to my recently completed 4 year series, Blind Carbon Copy. Rather than a continuation of this work, however, it represents a new tangent of thought that is likewise related but ultimately separate.

This residency and exhibition will be a multifaceted, aesthetic research project into the work and life of Jock Macdonald. In this sense, it will function as a postscript: a sprawling, artistic labyrinth of additional information and my idiosyncratic response to the concurrently held exhibition, “Jock Macdonald: Evolving Form” at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery.

I don’t entirely know where this ship is headed. I just want to see how far it can travel if I point the hull due north and let the wheel spin on its own. Regardless, I hope to provide some interesting snapshots along the way.
